CHAPTER VII

TRAMP SHIP TO ARMENIA, 1896

IN the summer of 1896 I became interested in the Armenians through attending drawing-room meetings held to raise funds to send out a delegate to investigate the alleged cruelty of the Turks to the Armenians. Armenians spoke at the meeting, and they aroused the spirit of adventure, still alive in me, which led me to accept the offer to become the delegate.

I was to get full particulars and information from certain Armenians. The information proved very scanty. I gathered that the expedition was to be conducted as secretly as possible, in order that it should not become known to the Turks, who were doing their utmost to prevent any strangers from entering Armenia. It was decided that I should find my way into the country as a butterfly collector, that I was to land at Trebizond on the Black Sea, and to go to Diarbekir and Van. I was given introductions to some Armenians in London through whom I should find a suitable interpreter to take with me.
